I’m Steel. I say what I mean, I mean what I say, and I give a shit about people.
The 99% Cooking Club is for real people who want to eat well without going broke. Simple recipes. Affordable ingredients. Food that’s f***ing delicious. No pretentious chef-y fluff. No “go to Whole Foods for one leaf” energy. None of that.
This community is quickly growing and it makes me smile to see the positivity in the comments, especially in these crazy times. I want to build a community that supports, interacts and thrives together on easy recipes, good food and saving money! By supporting my Substack, you’re allowing me to take more time to dedicate to The 99% Cooking Club. I want to pour as much time and effort as I can into this so that you can all get the most out of it! Welcome to the squad.
The mission
Here’s the problem. Groceries are expensive, time is tight, and most “budget cooking” content out there somehow still feels bland and depressing. Like you’re being punished for not making six figures. Meanwhile every “easy” recipe online wants you to buy 14 ingredients you’ll use once and then watch rot in the back of your fridge.
I got tired of it. So I built something better.
Every recipe here is designed around one idea:
You thought this would take too long or cost too much? I solved that.
Cost breakdowns. Step-by-step photos. Technique explained in normal English. Shopping tips that are Walmart-friendly. And not a single recipe that requires a specialty store trip for one ingredient.
Because here’s the thing. You CAN do more in the kitchen than you think. You’ve just never been taught how. We’ve all been gatekeeped about cooking for so long that we convinced ourselves we aren’t capable. Well that’s a bunch of BS.
This club is about building your toolbox. The techniques you learn making tortillas translate to SO MANY other things. The confidence you get from nailing a steak carries over to the next recipe and the one after that. And before you know it, some damn tortillas have positively impacted both your grocery bill and your whole approach to feeding yourself and your family.
I know that sounds deep for a cooking newsletter. But this is how my brain works.
Stop wasting money on things you’re capable of making. Stop letting your brain talk you out of learning something new. And stop letting anyone tell you that you can’t do this.
Because you can. And we’re gonna prove it.
Let’s get to work.
